$Id: thinkpad-casio.txt,v 1.1 2000/01/20 01:45:26 aoki Exp $ - general notes - as of ActiveSync 3.0, setting up a WinCE device no longer requires RAS (Remote Access Service, aka dialup services) to be set up on the WinNT (host) side. - the default is to connect by serial line at 19.2Kbp/s. this is probably safest place to start, as you never know how good the WinNT host PC's serial transceiver and UART are. however, on Dell PCs, you can apparently set the serial connection to the fastest available speed, 115Kb/s. - on the Cassiopeia: - set the serial speed. if you have a reasonable PC, i recommend you go ahead and do this before you first connect; resetting the connection speed (and perhaps other parameters) later may cause the host-side software to believe that a "new" device has connected. this may require deleting and recreating the default mobile device. Settings -> Communications -> PC Connection -> Change Connection -> Serial @ 115K - on the Thinkpad: - enable serial port as COM2 COM1 is usually used by the lucent winmodem. you can either try to share the COM1 port, or you can just set the external serial port to be COM2 or COM3. i did not have very good luck getting things to work on COM1 (e.g., ActiveSync thinks the modem is present on COM1) so i recommend using a different port. (note that the default port for IR services seems to be COM2, so i happened to pick COM3 as my serial port. but it doesn't really matter, as long as you're willing to configure things; at other times i have used successfully used COM2 per the instructions below.) - enable the COM2 port in BIOS Thinkpad Configuration -> Serial -> Enable, COM2 - or - BIOS -> Config -> Advanced -> Serial Port -> Enable, "2F8 IRQ3" - reboot - enable the new "port" in WinNT selecting the "default" option for the system resource parameters below (instead of explicit IRQs and I/O addresses) may work. i went ahead and set them to parameters that match what i used in the BIOS setup menu. Control Panel -> Ports -> Add -> COM2, 02F8, IRQ3 don't reboot (yet)! select COM2; Settings -> 115K - reboot - Install and configure ActiveSync 3.0 per instructions
